Work for Friday 11 November 2011
Please finish identifying the Persuasion quotes. You need only choose 10. Tell me in the margin which ones you used you book on,if any!
I need to see your focusing sentence that tells what the central idea of the paper is and what IDEAS from the novel (or scenes) you will be discussing that illustrate the point you are making.. . Or you could write the introduction that states your main idea and the points you are using in the paper. These ideas need to have my approval. Usually I am open to any creative, reasonable idea for a 750 word paper.
More later. Bring in your green grammar book. I have an extra I can lend to MM who wasn't here before this term. Any grammar book will do that has a sample MLA format paper in it.
Thanks, Mrs B

CHAPTER Thirteen
Charles returns from Lyme and sends the family’s old nursemaid to help Mrs. Harville nurse Louisa. Anne goes to stay with Lady Russell. After a few days she gets enough courage to call on the Crofts, who live in her former home. There she finds that the note she received about Louisa’s health had been brought by Captain Wentworth. She also discovers that when he had been at Kellynch he had inquired about her and expressed concern over her exertions at Lyme. Anne enjoys the company of the Crofts, who are very hospitable, and is happy they have made so few changes to the house.
1. Anne is very happy to hear that Captain Wentworth has inquired about her. Her heart is still his, and she hungers for every piece of information about him so she can try to piece together how he feels about her. Go back through the chapters in which he appears and list all his interactions with her. Is there hope for this relationship?
2. The Crofts are portrayed as one of the few happily married couples in the novel. What is there about their relationship that seems so different from the other relationships shown (Mary and Charles, the elder Musgroves)?
CHAPTER Fourteen
Louisa is making a slow recovery at Lyme. Charles and Mary return to Uppercross with very definite opinions of Captain Benwick. Mr. and Mrs. Musgrove bring the Harville children home with them for the Christmas holidays. Because Anne
and Lady Russell are present for the noisy Christmas celebration, Lady Russell is very glad to get away and travel to Bath.
1. What kinds of things seem to make Mary happy? Why might women at the time of the novel have focused on such things?
2. Why does Charles believe that Captain Benwick is very taken with Anne? What facts does he use to draw this conclusion? What signs do we use today to confirm that someone might be interested in us?
3. Over the Christmas holiday it is very popular to go to vacation spots. In Jane Austen’s day, Bath was a very popular spot with the landed gentry. Why?

Well I really think we have more than adequately discussed the two stories. You may ask me any additional questions you have in class.
I expect you to bring in to class ( along with your book ) Parts I, II, III, IV in rough draft form for discussion. Your rough draft must be readable by me!
Doing it on computer is a very good idea because you can then revise and edit without rewritting the whole thing. It's up to you. You must have this rough copy plus your book on Friday. The rest of the draft will be due on Tuesday Sept 27th .
We will begin Persuasion on Tues. the 27th and you need to have a copy by then.

Short Story Work for Sept 13, 2011
We will discuss Tobermory p.126 in which I asked you to mark the passages where Saki is satirizing the Upper Class Enlish society and their avoidance of privacy issues!
Then we will go to The Lifted Veil by George Eliot p.185. I would like you to mark and annotate the passages where Latimore talks about his strange gift and the dubious value it has so that he experiences more knowlege about the people in his life then he needs to in this Gothic story!
What is interesting about the authors' names? Extra Credit!
